Granddad

by Deana   Apr 11, 2008

He sat rocking, slowly back and forth
Hands a little shaky now, not like his youth
Back then they were steady and strong.
They had built this house

Wasn't much left to live for, he thought
Mom was gone, kids were grown and moved on
Even the old dog barely got up
Just laid there, eyes open at his feet

He'd looked at these same mountains
Near ninety years now
Hadn't changed much
A few new roads, a house or two
He was tired.

He knew that one day soon
He'd close his eyes and be taken home
In his sleep, he supposed
Didn't much care anyway

He looked out over the dirt driveway
Worn by the old pickups tires
Saw the shiny new car, with one of them foreign names
He could never remember

There she was, that little towhead
He called grandbaby
bringing light into his otherwise dimming life

Granddad, you old sleepy head!
Get up, we need to play today
A smile touched his lips, a side glance to heaven.
Maybe just a day or two more Lord.

My first try at a non-rhyming poem.

I just lost my Grandad, who was also a Great Grandad. This really touched me. And while I often comment, I never vote. But you're getting a vote. Very little poetry on here moves me like this did.

    Thank you.
