To all grandparents, my respect.

by Le Prince de Monte Cristo

To all Grandparents, my respect.

My grandfather was rough, a former officer
When I was little He frightened me sometimes
He had thick eyebrows and a moustache
He was honourable, a proud soldier
We had to be home at the ordered times!
No pocket money, no extra cash!

Yet my grandfather was also a loving granddad
Each year on holiday to his home we went
A long journey by train, adventure of the rails
Despite the discipline, to see him we were glad.
Summer term at the farm for many years we spent
Harvesting we were, lifting heavy straw bales.

We were not spoiled like children today
We had no DVD! I had never seen the sea!
I worked hard for my pocket money
I had a toy for Xmas and one for my birthday
Yet I was privileged, for I had love you see
My grandfather was rough yet he made me happy

Today it is my turn to be a grandfather
Just like he was, I am rough sometimes
Then I recall what his love meant to me
Just like he was, I am a former officer.
I love my grandchildren. They annoy me sometimes!
So when I'm gone, will they remember me?

I wish they remember how much I love them
The way I remember, today my granddad's love.
I want to honour him and Grandma together.
They taught me politeness. I want to thank them
They taught me respect not by fear but through love.
In my heart and my soul they will stay forever.
