Thinking of Dad

by Brenda Nelson   Jun 13, 2012

When I grow up
I want to be just like you

You showed me strength in all the right places
From happy to angry, there's so many faces

I could swing a hammer and make something great
I could dance away pain to lift life's big weight

How waking up early allows afternoon play
And that staying up late makes a long and hard day

After trips to the auction and lessons in "deals"
We crawled under the hood and fixed my new wheels

How tramping around fields on cold days and hot
Led to math applications my friends never got

The common sense lessons I'm so grateful for
Have brought me self-confidence and so much more

Loving my momma gave warmth to my heart
So I knew what it felt like at my time to start

I watched softballs you hit go so high in the sky
I would catch them and think, "I wish I could fly"

Then you gave me wings when I went to Brazil
But kept holding on till I developed the skills
To run on my own with my own kids to teach
And show them how high a person can reach
