Tytler's Cycle

Tytler's Cycle
By Mark Spencer

America is full of groups
Who congregate like Cub Scout troops
Believing they've a better eye
On what is best for you and I

Convinced the truth is theirs to wield
They gather on the battle field
And frame the next lifestyle for you
The words you speak and things you do

And though you're the majority
These groups have gained authority
And with it they will overturn
A vote that fills them with concern

And such a vote will always be
A law with which they disagree
For lady justice tipped her scales
And freedom hit the dusty trails

It's been replaced by group control
They know what's best for every soul
For they're the wisest in the land
It falls to them to hold your hand

If your beliefs oppose their rules
They'll be removed from courts and schools
No God will tell them what to do
That is the job they do for you

For you aren't wise enough to choose
And yours are antiquated views
So sit back and enjoy the ride
They know the way and they'll provide

This is the way life has become
We're marching to this beating drum
They have a passion for their cause
While apathetic spirits pause

Dependence is the next in line
And you can't even see the sign
That Tytler's Cycle has come round
It won't be long before we're bound

For Tytler knew the cycle's path
He saw the signs and did the math
But apathy has no concerns
And this is how the circle turns

There aren't enough courageous souls
To put an end to selfish goals
The Cub Scout troops will win the day
And theirs will be the only way

Until the cycle starts again
And faith inspires the citizen
To fight for life and liberty
To overcome complacency

This is our future and our past
For freedom never seems to last
In selfishness it meets defeat
And Tytler's Cycle just repeats

But we don't learn from history
Such things remain a mystery
If you don't think that statement's true
Was Tytler's Cycle new to you
