Dark art (a true occurrence)

by Dancing Rivers   Nov 19, 2014

There comes in the night
a certain sense of surreal euphoria,
as the light of day washes away,
and darkness is painted on the sky.

A strange thing occurred,
one euphoric night,
as I laid my head to rest,
I was visited by a knight.

His face was a canvas of darkness
painted by the evil deeds,
of mans sinful talents,
angel of darkness, king of death,

You came to me in haste,
my frail heart pounded in distress,
as you painted strange words in my mind
I saw you silhouetted at my door,

To this day your words are a mystery,
yet it felt as though Lucifer were calling me,
welcoming me into his kingdom of night,
when the world erased me from their memory.

I listened to your voice, deep dark strokes
of fear were painted upon my soul
and as I lay there paralyzed,
my guardian called out, do not be afraid.

Close your eyes, calm yourself
no matter what, cloak the easel of your mind,
although the knight calls out to you,
know that Heaven is with you.

I closed my eyes and did not breathe
for fear that Lucifer might steal my breath
and paint my soul with evil intent,
I listened to your voice, my angel.

So many years after that night,
I realise that my beloved was there,
my mother, watching over me,
protecting me from what no soul should see.

For weeks I could not sleep at night,
for fear of another visit from the knight,
and though nobody would believe me,
I know in my heart,I was visited by evil.

Though I do not know his intent,
I believe with all my soul,
Lucifer wanted me,I was the price of debt
but I'm thankful, for my angel,

Mother you were there for me,
after all the years I'd rejected your memory
you remained true to your promise,
from the day you slipped away,

I will always be there for you my child,
even in death I'm with you,
protecting you from harm,
from the debt that was to be paid.

Mother you were a master of arts,
Of which I suspect I was meant to learn
yet you knew that was no life for me
and you blessed me in my sleep

Thank you mama, for your gift,
for a second chance at life
for protecting me from your path
the path of the dark arts.

Wow - I wish I could nominate this - this moved me, thoroughly. Your language and storytelling in this piece is masterful. The fact you base it on true events makes it all the more brilliant (from a reader's view anyway!)

Deep poem with quite a lot happening inside of it, but what is happening is so powerful and it really tells like a story as it happened and how it happened, like you are reliving it as you remember it.

I like the message within this poem about faith and belief, and how you can be touched by people who you think you have lost, and who are no longer here, and it shows how they can still reach you, still love you and still protect you no matter where they are.

I think it is even more special that the bond here is the mother and daughter, because it shows that a mother really will do anything to protect her daughter and not let anything get in the way of that.

    Beautiful piece, well done

This poem is based on a true occurrence from about three years ago, in which a hooded figure came to my bedroom door one night and chanted strange words which sounded like a curse and a calling,I have never been more terrified in my life than I was that night, yet somehow I have also never felt such a moment of peace as I did when I heard the voice of my long dead mother telling me to remain calm and keep my eyes closed, her voice,I believe, saved my very soul, as I mention in the poem, my mother and those before her were involved in the craft,I know this from memories of multiple rituals and ceremonies I had witnessed as a young child, and to this day I believe that the last ceremony I ever witnessed was meant to be one of my initiation into the craft, yet my mother protected me from it then in life, as she also did in death.
