A Mate for Life (Sonnet)

by Mr. Darcy   Sep 14, 2015

How does my soul sing clear its song for you -
When my strong voice transmits a foreign air?
I shall translate to give you half a clue -
A chance to serve up what is right and fair.
Your eyes mirror my hearts only desire,
To find a mate to live a life of ease;
And know that kindness burns just like a fire,
With love for nature and a world of peace.
But, if the world delivered only doom,
My love would shine a light on ev'ry step'-
To keep you safe and have you home real soon,
Come to my arms a place for you to rest.
Whilst birds in trees have breath enough to sing,
my love will serve your life and all that brings.

    Judging comment:

I've always found sonnets one of the more difficult forms to pull off without it seeming forced but Michael does a wonderful job here.

The imagery painted throughout is vivid enough that it allows the reader to visualize it in their mind while the poem itself is beautifully detailed and elegantly written, whilst the rhyming flows perfectly and the emotion is present from start to finish.

"But, if the world delivered only doom, My love would shine a light on ev'ry step'-" I adore this, the positivity that love will overcome anything, even the entire world if needed. The closing two lines I found to be seductive and excellently wraps up the poem.

    Truly beautiful work here.
