Life summed up!

by J Nair   Feb 9, 2016

Childhood, like the white lacy foam riding on dancing waves
Gleefully surge on to the shore carrying exciting secrets of the ocean's core.
Bursting with joy, wanting to share it all
Only to be cheated and left behind, stuck on wet shores
Sadly vanishing into grains of sand
Tearfully watching the receding waves.

Like the bursting bubbles in an effervescent drink,
Youth rushes with exciting moments only to fizzle out at the end.
The vivaciousness of an enchanting and promising evening
Bursts and evaporates as night dances into its darkest encore.

And all your dreams, like the little prince riding on grandpa's walking stick,
Brandishing a make believe sword,
You charge through life with all your faith,
Under the illusion of conquering the world.

Only to end up as a withered old stump,
Where dogs stray, only to take a leak.

    Judging comment:

I love the slightly humorous narrative the author employed, it takes you from the stages of life in a relaxed manner that screams "life's not that serious" from the bit about the child playing with a cane, to the ending verse. Great write.

    Hello Jay,

This poem has much humour. I especially like the little boy using grandpa's walking stick as a trusty steed. A lovely image of childs play. I also like the description of fizzing pop- drinking so much your belly bulges. The best bit for me was the burping competitions. Oh what fun!

Thanks for the memories and the wonderful worded imagery.

    Take care,

    Michael

    Jay,

Lovely to read a new piece from you and this is a cracker. SOMEONE NOMINATE! I am out of votes already!
The imagery, flow and content of this piece are spectacular and you have incorporated some very subtle but effective uses of alliteration, which I love.

    All the very best,
    Ben
