Lives for Sale

by Meena Krish   Sep 7, 2016

In the shadow of religion
atrocity walks with pride.

Every ritual and tradition
a shackle upon many women.

Wide spread ignorance
chains the less fortunate,
misinterpretation of texts
render these innocents helpless.

The floods of greed
do not seem to cease...

From small girls to young women
their lives put up for sale.

Caged screams and tears
echo within the walls of immoral minds,

Many banned wishes
drain each woman's spirit.

They have no shelter
that will save them from this lurid reality,

And their dreams...

Does not get a chance to mature or breathe.

Unless...

Society decides to find a cure
for this poison that plagues
many countries and their women.

Meena, so much can be said about this sad but very truthful piece. Women seem to endure more throughout life than men do because of religion etc which unfortunate because women give life which is one of the best things we can do.

Great work and sorry I missed it.

It is so sad that women have to endure so much because of bigotry and oppression. The road to enlightenment and relief seems such a long one but I think that we are slowly getting there. I admire deeply those women who are able to stand up against oppression and make a difference like Malala Yousafzai. Writing such a poem as this is important because it helps raise awareness.
