The Last Day

The Last Day

I see the light shinning in the meadows
Beyond drained creeks which once had grace
Where yesterday became tomorrow
Beneath winter's calm embrace.

I looked up in contemplation
Imagined children at play
Running and tumbling through the grassy hills
Naively smiling on The Last Day.

Quietly I turned; felt returned -
Like rags which no longer fit right,
Birds that once had flight,
Or rain falling into the silent night.

I gazed in darkness, searching light
Where the hopeless homeless go to die
And the silent sounds of night lay
As they go gently into The Last Day.

The muted sounds of trees rustling
I could hear off in the distance.
The chirping crickets singing
Fortold my strange existence.

I searched for something; found nothing
But a single fire - a warm flare,
Where my heart found peace, naked and bare
In the arms of love, where I belong
I guess I'll be okay there.

Just then, with all worries fading
My love renews my soul that's ailing.
The warmth of her embrace comes my way
Maybe its not The Last Day.
