Words played from the grave (English Sonnet)

by Mr. Darcy   Jan 9, 2017

~ ~ Words played from the grave ~ ~

So many years have passed and still I cry,

flavours of you still spin within my mind;

like when you stopped and showed me how to try:

work hard for love or leave it far behind.

My childhood sang whenever you would stay,

The games we played, attention never waned.

You showed that sun is kept within the hay

but, with a blink you merged with summer rain.

My heart was strong; it wept, but never broke,

Residual words gave wisdom to the grain.

If ever there were times the words you spoke

Returned in wakeful dreams, "believe you can!"

~ ~ ~ ~

Her presence has now drifted far away

Her wisest words remain with me always.

    Sir Michael,

This is a sad yet lovely dedication to a lost relative ...I like the way you remember this person and her words of wisdom. .. Nothing more to say coz Em had a time digging this one. ..

    Well done as always

Michael, such a lovely sonnet and a beautiful tribute to your grandma. If we are truly blessed we have at least one person in our life that just makes us feel like we are the most special person in their world. I can definitely tell she was that person. Well done-

Mr D, yet another wonderful sonnet. I do hope like Kasie, they come naturally to me with the workshop otherwise I shall throw my toys put the pram.. In seriousness this is lovely and as always I like the spaces. I do believe this is about someone you were close to that has passed on but their words of encouragement have always lived on.

1/ A great opening that shows many years have passed I think since you lost this special person you were close to. I like the imagery though sad of their person etc (flavours) still being around you. Their words of wisdom are good here and very promising,

2/ Now, I feel this is about a grandmother as this part reminds me of when my Nan used to stay over the Christmas/New year period and we would play many games usually card/board games and times were always good. I love the last two lines here I feel that it's about seeing the happiness despite everything and then she became ill though I am probably wrong.

3/ Even through the heartache of losing this special lady you stayed strong and the words she would say stayed I printed in your mind.. That's what I think anyway. The imagery of a heart weeping but not breaking is very vivid.

Couplet/ Loved this part.. You may not be able to see her but she lives on in her words.
    Beautiful even though somewhat sad.
    Take care, Em

Correct, Em. This is about my late grandmother. She had and still does have a huge impact on my life. Each Christmas she would visit, traveling by train from Devon. She really made our Christmas times special, but more than this, she showed me unconditional love, which I am eternally grateful for. A gift that keeps on giving!
