Keeper of dreams

by Melissa   May 5, 2006

I'm just a country girl
searching for some truth
in this fictional world...

And my daddy,
he's been living
among the stars
for almost fourteen years...

He was a carpenter,
a builder of homes,
a keeper of dreams,
and he taught me
what it's like to believe...

But he's gone now
and it's been breaking my heart
since I was sixteen,
on Sunday I'm turning thirty...

The truth speaks
and I'm embarrassed to say
I called Ms. Cleo
for all the answers,
but she told me
what I wanted to hear
and not what I needed to hear
so I questioned her physic abilities
and she hung up on me...

Poetry said,
invest your words in me
and become
a new age troubadour
opening up
for all the interpreters to see
that your just as clueless as them
and the insatiable need
to protect your heart is evident
just like the truth you swear upon...

And magazines,
they keep telling me what to wear
and what not to wear,
but nothing about
this heart on my sleeve...

I still can't find that advice I seek
and I surely don't know
what's in or out
or what family's all about...

I've been making wishes
on the stars that fall
just to be seen,
asking the trees and God
for some simplicity
and the bruises on my knees
prove just how much I bleed,
but hey daddy, look at me
I still believe
I'm a keeper of dreams...
