This takes me back in time to a special place I used to sit. So many conversations took place amongst many other things. A bench to be exact under a tree. Those memories I will always cherish sadly the bench was removed. Thank you for sharing, enjoyed reading. All the best.

Thank you Dagmar. When I was a small child I loved to sit under a willow tree and watch and listen to nature - the bench I refer to has been with me many years - it's so silly, but it holds so many memories and has moved with me from place to place - I always wanted a bench by the sea - it came with me to Dorset - not exactly sea views, but almost the same! The memories will always stay - the poor bench has got to go even though I will be truly sad to say goodbye - so silly isn't it!

Oh my word that poem was so lovely and filled with emotion and memories it brought genuine tears to my eyes. Its amazing how much history a bench sees, So many coffees, so many conversations, The good and the bad times. A piece of history that will hopefully live on for many more years.
Take care all my best wishes Milly xx

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. A bench hears so many things and sees so many things, yet remains silent - the memories we always take with us, whether the bench is there or not!

    Love, love, love this.

It took me back to when my Nan was alive and there was a picnic bench in the woods near where she lived and we would always go each summer to have picnics there and watch the waterfall flowing. It brings back so many beautiful memories, if only i could go back to that bench one more time with her.

    Beautiful, Em

    Hello M

I have to be honest: how on earth you have managed to bring a lump to my throat with a poem about a bench is quite beyond me; perhaps it is because I know a little bit about it! On the other hand, I don't think anyone could fail to read this without being stirred somewhat.

My friend we sit together now
Through all the years of youth
The autumn of our lives is nigh
    We've shared so many truths.

    ^^

This is my favourite stanza and the most moving, in my opinion.

The rhyming is smooth and unforced throughout and the extended personification of this old and battered bench is wonderful.

Hi Angela Wood is such a marvellous material warm and engrained and weathered through the years holding many stories and memories like this bench . It remindsme of Joe Corries poem "Ode to a Grecian Urn" in that it beautifully expresses a very personal and heartfelt relationship with the object
