Pest

I should have acknowledged
the disgust in your tone,
the way you gave inflection
to menial words
and draped quotes around my shoulders
like a well worn cliche
while paraphrasing time
and distance
and us...

I should have scurried off
to some dark corner,
like the cockroach I knew I'd become

I always feel the loving grace in your poems, but this one showed a greyer side of you. I am saddened of the tone, almost empathically. But I also admire the strength you showed here to reveal such pain and regret.

At first I though the title was referred to the person this poem is relayed to, but when I encountered the draping of quotes and, especially the ending, I realized it was the author who felt like the pest.
