Blackbird (Acrostic)

by cassie hughes   May 12, 2016

Beauty clothed in feathers black yet rainbow dipped,
lustrous and glinting under sunbeams kiss.
Aloft he wheels then settles choosily upon a bough
claws clinging tight as it dips and sways in boisterous winds.
Knowing, bright and beady eyes survey the fresh turned bed
below in search of wriggling prey to spear with saffron beak.
In silence he waits, almost ornamental in this stillness.
Rash worm peeks out to bathe in moist, tilled earth,
dark body stirs, descends, then leaves behind an empty space.

    Cassie,

Your first line had me.... what an elegant way to describe the blackbird.. I was taken at that very moment! "Rainbow dipped" made this beautiful bird magical!

and the ending was just brilliant, loved the ending, did not see that coming... I was like " Oh no the worm"... ha ha

Truly a unique and beautiful acrostic nature poem... the word usage was wonderful!!

    Hello Cassie,

The Blackbird is one of my favourite birds I can often be found head turned skywards looking up at Mr Blackbird singing beautifully. His gentle fluctuating warbling notes sends thrills through me each and every time; I really don't think I will ever tire of his song. And what about Mrs Blackbird I hear you cry! Well, I am glad you asked, I love her too, her darker milk chocolate feather coat that perfectly compliments her hubby.

I like the way you describe his feathers has being 'rainbow dipped' and then the 'glinting' under the kisses of the sun. A beautiful way to describe the colours that sparkle in the sunshine. We have starlings that nest in our garden and their plumage glistens blues, purples with added flecks of orange, red and gold. Stunning.

Then your bird, in flight selects a branch away from the wind. But still the claws are needed to anchor him firmly. Cassie, you may want to change wind to winds?

Lol - the 'wriggling prey' made me smile - I am always amazed out how they spot them; but they do! A gardener is always shadowed by a blackbird surveying freshly dug flowerbeds. I like the 'saffron' coloured beak - a wonderful contrast against the jet cheeks *do birds have cheeks?* lol

A great finish describing the act of plucking a 'Rash worm' I mean fancy a brave worm thinking he could sneak some fresh air without harm. The empty space says it all, doesn't it!

Cassie, a joyous write about a joyous bird, the Blackbird.

    Take care,

    Michael

You may be pleased to know I agree with you about the winds and have changed the word accordingly ;)
