The Banyan Tree

by Arunansu   Aug 29, 2007

Only a breeze dares to whisper.

Occupied birds wrangle.

In silence he has been,
years grew and fell from his
relaxed arms
dropping ropes
for the thoughts in store to dangle
along with the bouncy kids
from neighborhood.

Outsized mess of the canopy
provided refuge
to unfamiliar insects and weary
aliens, without his knowing.

His attention is far off
perhaps in altered state of awareness
in mindful meditation.

Had I been like him
an assemblage of
python-like trunks
could have defied ravaging tempests
remaining unperturbed,
throughout the century.

I would have laid a soft
bed of dried dreams
for your rest.
