A Valentine's Day Sonnet

by Navy Blue Heart   Feb 7, 2008

Somehow it's come round again, that day of frills and pink.
Stuffed toys and sweets invade the shops and cause my heart to sink.
There are Facebook applications that make me want to scream,
Asking 'what would be my perfect date' and 'will I meet the guy of my dreams?'
Poems announce the obvious fact roses are red and violets are blue
And for some reason spelling's forgotten as 'love' becomes spelled with a 'u'
Why on earth do people lose their heads on this ridiculous day of the year?
The world seems to revolve around love and common sense just disappears.
It's not like romance doesn't exist for the other 364 days
Yet couples insist on getting caught up in Feb 14th's fluffy ways.
Don't get me wrong I'm all for love at any other time
But it's very hard to be single on the day of St Valentine.
So as for this pretentious day, I think I'll have to pass
And you can take your cards and chocolate and shove them up your arse.
