Angel Wings

I was standing by the hole as they lowered him in the ground.
Everybody was sobbing in sorrow, but I didn't hear a sound
My thoughts were spinning rapidly inside my fragile mind.
I thought back to a year ago when he had first became mine.

As I stared down at the casket, a tear dripped down my face.
My fingers played with the edges of my gown of black lace.
I didn't feel the coldness of the rain upon my skin.
Everything was numb to me, outside and within.

"God, why'd you take him? Why'd he have to leave?"
My voice was hoarse and rough, I didn't sound like me.
The sky darkened over and the thunder rumbled shrill.
I felt the sudden feeling that to live I had no will.

He'd been the one who had saved me, turned my dark to light.
The time I'd met him, I had planned to die that night.
I was broken on the inside, bleeding on the out.
My heart was barely beating and my soul was full of doubt.

But, his eyes were so blue and he stood at six foot three.
He was my saving angel who'd come to rescue me.
He'd changed my outlook on life, made my heart beat,
An angel without wings that I was lucky enough to meet.

I could feel my heart shattering, an aching in my chest.
But, I knew this feeling, I knew this pain best.
I dropped a single rose of the purest white,
Said goodbye to him and the rest of my life.

I knew that he was really gone and to heaven he would fly.
But, maybe we would meet again just on the other side.
The sun shown threw the clouds and I felt a sudden peace,
I knew that my angel was getting back his wings.
