What Of The Stories?

by C Cattaway   Jan 2, 2009

Someone, somewhere, once told me a story.
Someone once promised a rainbow.
Someone, a long time ago, showed me how to cry.
No-one warned me I'd cry for you.

One time, I learned of the riches, in life.
Once, I thought friends were the key.
"One old friend's better than two new ones",
That's what was once said to me.

Friends are a funny thing, I never knew
Would leave us, after all we'd learnt.
I thought that trust was a sign of affection.
I never thought I'd get burnt.

I gave a lifetime to you, and our friendship.
I thought, together, once old,
That we would relive all the laughter and tears,
And tire not of stories we told.

Well, friends I've met since, have been stronger than you.
They rode the storms by my side,
Even if not there in person, they loved me.
They never turned; ran to hide.

And now, we are closer than ever before.
All that I learned as a child
Taught me to love hard, for life has surprises.
My true friends never took to flight.

I missed you a long time, but years, they move on.
Another has started, today.
I'll love you forever, but I have to go,
For I need to support those who stayed.

For, someone once told me, "Don't give to receive",
And never's a truer word spoken,
As when I have needed a friend by my side,
I realised our friendship was broken.

A new year today. A new life's begun.
But Katie can never replace you,
For she has a heart, and it's golden, unlike
The stone that I see, when I face you.

I miss how we were, when we listened to stories.
I miss how the innocence felt.
But I've now grown up, and I value my friends.
I watched, while our years upped and went.

And now, when she needs me, my real friend will feel
The care that I've got in my heart,
For I learned, the hard way, that old friends still leave,
But stronger friends can never part.
