Under the Bed

by Inside the Liar   Mar 27, 2009

Looking in the mirror,
The lady of the manor watches herself
As she slips her two pearl earrings,
A last gift from her departed husband,
Onto her ears, before pulling her hair forward
To cover them (along with the memories) so that they're hidden
From the naked eyes of interest.

A tap on the door startles her from her reverie,
Jolting her back to her present.
As she glances up,
A now familiar face replaces that of the man she once loved.
This new man, her new groom, in this new life
A harried expression on his face,
Their child's blanket wrapped in his arms.

"She refuses to go to sleep unless you kiss her good night."
She smiles, he sighs
And reaches out his hand.
She takes it gracefully, and, without a second thought,
Sweeps the old diary with the details of her past love back,
Under the bed, where it has belonged for years.
