Blank Page

by Sylvia   Aug 21, 2009

A benign blank page
frequently reflects the condition
of a writer's psyche.
Thoughts are brought into existence,
and they reach for the pen.

Mesmerized by ink, as it flows with ease,
letters take their place
in the endless empty space,
with deliberate design.
Quickly, parchment is occupied by words.

A behemoth, skepticism, is unleashed.
Will the soliloquy be appreciated?
Or is it a mindless monologue,
a churlish catharsis of the soul?

Whatever the answers may be,
those words are owned by me.
A responsibility not taken lightly,
since oft quoted, "The pen is mightier than the sword."

I liked the poem. I enjoy poetry about writing. The first part of the poem is more appealing to me. A nice write.

Wow, how nicely done. I like how it is simple and true. Our words are always our own....

Writing about writing is probably the most overdone topic in the recent history of amateur poetry. And without a generous dose of humor, it just becomes a pain to read. As in this case. I appreciate your attempt to use alliteration, but at the cost of the poem? I mean, must you use unnecessary adjectives (adjectives are unnecessary more often than not) only to show that you can use alliteration? eg. benign blank page, churlish catharsis, mindless monologue. Poetic devices always work better when used in a more subtle way. Here it is very apparently forced in (which makes the piece appear a little pompous).

I am not sure if there actually should have been a comma after behemoth and infact I don't even see the need for that word.

What this poem lacks the most, is a strong visual imagery. It's merely 'telling' and without the much needed pinch of salt.

The word 'oft' was only used till the last century and there is absolutely no reason why you should choose it over 'often' when you have opted for a more contemporary style.

    Wonderfully penned Sylvia...
the flow of emotions of a writer... captured by paper ... and then read by the reader... sometimes... nicely captured..

it reminds of how sometimes I just feel like writing without any meaning... not to be read afterwards... just to let out my feelings...
