Bit(ter)

Careful to tread where sand lay quiet,
I kept upright
Air tight,
No harm getting in past my eyes,
And I kept thinking maybe tomorrow
Would be a better day to hear your insults.
But a better day never came.
I slept for hours on end,
Insomnia failing to hinder the sweet blackness
That enveloped my mind and soul
Like your body used to envelop my body.
I kept hearing the phantom sounds of your kisses,
That slight pop in the darkness, even when I could feel nothing,
That kept me up so many times,
And you drove me crazy but now I miss the sound.
I slipped down that slope
Too many times
Groping to find some hand-hold,
To find some simple pleasure to hang my hat on
But nothing came around
And nothing got better.
I wanted you to tell me how you felt
With words that would make my teeth hurt like a frosted cookie
But all you gave me was alcohol and cheap crackers.
That taste that lingers bitter on your tongue,
Giving sustenance without ever really fulfilling.
I wanted more,
And was never given anything but that final scoff
And goodbye sex that rocked my world,
Throwing me off tilt and sending me straight into the sun to burn.
I was careful where I tread,
A tourist on the path of the snake,
Jungle book, safari shit that caught me off guard
And the pain got past my eyes,
And I was bit.
