Hello Again, Goodbye Again

by Stephanie Tangedahl   May 16, 2011

I thought you'd stick around for good
But I guess that I was wrong
And all I kept on writing for
Was a father/daughter song

The days went by and you never called
But we loved you anyway
There's reasons why I waited
For that call that never came
I waited for it just to hear you say:

"I never knew an emptiness
That could make me feel so all alone
So ask your mom for my forgiveness
'Cause I'm ready to come home

Give your sisters hugs and kisses
That I'd give them if I could
Tell them that I love them
And you mom that I misunderstood

There's things I've done that I regret
But I've learned from my mistakes
And it's every day that I wonder
If I've apologized too late"

I still can't wait to learn how to build
And hang a home-made shelf
And learn to fix a car with you, though
Now I've got to by myself

Did Angus Young impress you?
'Cause I drew it for your birthday
I hope you like it more than me
It only took me seven days

Do letters do you any good?
Would you write one just so we can hear you say:

"I never knew an emptiness
That could make me feel so all alone
So ask your mom for my forgiveness
'Cause I'm ready to come home

Give your sisters hugs and kisses
That I'd give them if I could
Tell them that I love them
And you mom that I misunderstood

There's things I've done that I regret
But I've learned from my mistakes
And it's every day that I wonder
If I've apologized too late
That's why I'm calling just so I can say:

I've never known an emptiness
That kills me on its own
It's time I got my act together
Before my kids are grown

I know I haven't been the best dad
That a father's supposed to be
But I'll be there when you graduate
I promise, you just wait and see

There's things we do that we all regret
But we learn from our mistakes
And I know with the four that love me
That it's never gonna be too late"

There were countless times when we all rocked out
To those AC/DC tunes
I rocked out to "Highway to Hell" alone
Again this afternoon
'Cause I miss you dad, and wonder what you're up to.
