Unexpected Best Friend

by Chloe Johnson   Aug 9, 2011

This is an ode to my best friend
My BFF who will still be here in the end.
When I was 11 years old we crossed our paths-
Intentional, of course
We are the kind to forever last.
I tell her about all of my problems- the torn jeans, old shoes, the works.
She simply stands and listens and never speaks back-
That's probably why it works.
On a bad day, I can drive to see her
Whether or not she wants to see me, well that's not referred.
She was there when I broke both of my legs
Remained calm on those, "She said this to me," days.
She stood strong as I wandered off my path
Always waited for me to find my way back
Of course we didn't meet the way people to now
You know, Facebook, since it runs the minds of everyone now
No, we became friends the old fashioned way
She cost $10,000 of which I had to pay
You see, there is something you should understand-
She is not a woman nor a man.
Oh no, she has four hooves and big teeth
She doesn't bark, doesn't meow, and doesn't speak.
She has a copper coat topped with snowflake spots
A face cute enough to make my heart stop
She is a horse
Of course : )
My best friend, and I couldn't ask for more
If the friendship is reciprocated I wouldn't know-
When I'm on her back, it's not love she shows.
Her name is Bee O' Lena
Beebe for short
I tend to her teeth, her feet, her every snort
Her parents are very famous in the horse world
But Beebe was born with a deformed hoof when she rocked my world
She was going to be used for slaughter, for the people competing in the sport of equas had no use for her
But the second I looked into her fiery eyes-it was an instant lure.
As she grew older, her personality began to shine
She became notorious for her stubborn attitude of which nothing could define.
Riding her wasn't an easy challenge-
After all when riding a horse you must know:
The correct leads.
Neck reining.
Direct reining.
Leg pressure.
Turn on the haunches.
Turn on the forehand.
Side in.
Side out.
Rollback.
Toes in.
Heels down.
Doesn't that seem like a challenge?
She could infuriate me more than anyone
But I love her as if she and I are the only ones
Nothing can replace riding your horse in the company of fellow friends
Long summer days, saddling up again and again
Then one day, Beebe wasn't acting right
She had a fever, and she wasn't putting up a fight.
Her deformed hoof was getting worse
She couldn't walk, and I knew she was hurt.
Years of not being able to ride were to follow
I was completely consumed in wallow
I almost lost her one night-
She had a seizure
I was there trying to help
But I couldn't assist her
Months of problems after problems came and went
I wanted to cry and scream and vent
July 2, 2009 finally came
The day I moved to Fresno
And away from the San Diego waves
Beebe came with me, I couldn't leave her behind
A friend like she is, I'll never find
Eventually after thousands of vet bills and tears...
...Beebe looked at me with no fear....
Her hoof slowly began to heal but not without the pain
It's like having a constant knee strain
Today, Beebe is 17, middle aged for a horse
She is healthy, and takes life on with full fore
People may think I'm crazy for calling her my best friend
But without her, I don't know where I would have been.
She saved my life
Dried every tear I cried..
She is my horse.
Of course : )
