Worn down

by Larry Chamberlin   Aug 15, 2011

You fall on me like a torrent
amidst the worst drought
in memory - terrible, eroding
my strength of solitude.

Melted away are my protests
and nowhere can be found
the firm resolve never to let
anyone onto this solitary isle.

Eons of sediment lost for good,
valuable soil to bury my hopes
washed away in the swirling
stream of you - now dissolved.

Exposed to the vagaries
of love and wind and rain
seeds of despair once nourished
turn into roots to bind our lives.

What a unique way you have portrayed love in this write. To the many years it takes for erosion to wear something down.
Then the solitary island, feels like you're trying to hide from love. Yet it finds you and wears down the shield you have used to hide your heart

    Exposed to the vagaries
of love and wind and rain
    seeds of despair once nourished
turn into roots to bind our lives.

This is my favorite stanza. The roots that bind our lives. Hopefully they plant themselves deeply. So this will be a long standing love. Many just barely plant their roots in the top layer of the soil. Allowing the wind to blow that love away.

Larry, I love this. I particularly appreciate the way you have portrayed love as this aggressive force that comes in and sweeps so much of the defences you had put up aside. "Eons of sediment lost for good, valuable soil to bury my hopes." This is wonderful. But for the better because the seeds of despair that were 'once nourished' have turned to roots that bind your lives.
The idea of love being the aggressor and your negative emotions and defences helpless before it is brilliant here - you have portrayed love as the enemy, almost, and that's how it reads. Until the end where we see the positive affect it has had on you.
Well done Larry - this is excellent.
    All the best,
    Ben
