Ducks take shortcuts

by Larry Chamberlin   Feb 4, 2012

Sitting quietly at Meyer Park
on the banks of Cypress Creek;
no creatures around
but me and the birds.

Crows circle overhead
bespeaking war
and carrion threats.

Ducks float lazily on the creek
down streaming,
occasionally muttering,
fussing, embanking.

Mallards flock -
several males
with singleton hens.

A group of 5 (4 males)
come up the bank beside me,
squawking pleasant banter,
waddle past me to a copse;
they inspect a trench,
perhaps a nest.

The female has lingered
by me - disturbed:
"Well, maybe these bozos
just see you as a bread-feeder,
but I know you
for what your teeth are."

After complaint,
she toddles over
to the nest proposal
and the males.

Then she returns,
asking me again to leave
or state my intentions.

Finally, ignored,
she leads her beaus away,
down the creek,
for more isolated prospects.

I loved the narration, the waddling of ducks, the description and the interaction.
    Loved the imagination :D

I have always found the duck ponds to be a place to release my worries. I would sit for hours and feed them or just watch.

You penned this with knowledge, maybe I have seen you there pondering your worries as well.

I am adding this to my favorites, it's just a delight.

    How lovely is this!

I love how you're talking bout nature and animals. Ducks are gorgeous especially when they are small - little ducklings so cute

I love how you incorporated human interaction with the duckings.

Especially when you have said that she has come up to you asking you to state your purpose or to leave. Oh brilliant!!!

    I love this!!!
