Budding Tree

by Ingrid   Mar 14, 2012

In the garden, near the river

my tree stands tall and proud

it has no knowledge of the sorrow I had

for when the branches became brittle

I had no choice.....

all Fall and Winter it was but a naked torso

with its limbs cut off and buried underneath

using that compost

my green giant became strong again

and see....

the first buds are showing off their tiny little leaves!

this sunny afternoon I decide to become a tree-hugging fool.

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of may,...

thanks for calling me a fool .

  • This is a great poem about nature, but then it is also so much more! It sounds as if it is a metaphor for your life (perhaps why you placed it in 'Poems about life'..?) - like you are that tree growing and changing throughout the seasons and finally coming out at the other side brand new and whole again, and no one would ever guess that you were so vulnerable for a short while.

^^I dont know if that interpretation is correct or even near reality, but I know there is definitely something else underlying the nature aspect of the poem.

    Loved it! 5/5

'In the garden, near the river
my tree stands tall and proud
it has no knowledge of the sorrow I had
for when the branches became brittle
    I had no choice.....'
This reminded me of my mother. How she's always so worried when one of us is sick or injured, yet we didn't really notice how caring she was.. I actually find these lines really sad, I remember being small, I snuck up in my parent's room to find her praying the rosary when my dad was sick..

'all Fall and Winter it was but a naked torso
with its limbs cut off and buried underneath'
    Great imagery.

    'using that compost
my green giant became strong again
    and see....
the firstbuds are showing off their tiny little
    leaves!'
This reminded me of my mother again :) She'd be really happy whenever she's sure we're better.

'this sunny afternoon I decide to become a
    tree-hugging fool.'
I love the ending :) I love nature as well and I remember the time I found out about illegal logging and stuff that I also became a 'tree-hugger' not literally, though ;)

Great write. I can connect with this piece, and it's definitely going to my favorites :) 5/5
