Beach Day in Oz

by Lioness   Mar 27, 2012

I stood upon the
golden sand which
has quickly formed
a mould around
my bare feet.

Each grain slowly
massages in between
my toes and rubs
around my ankles -

as if to give me some
relief it knew
I was begging
for.

The summer heat
makes it unbearable
to keep grounded,
so I scurry on my
toes from one
end of the beach
to the coolness
of the waves.

In an instant,
the water calms
me down though,
at the same
time I feel the need
to yell and scream
because the coldness
still comes as
a shock.

I wrap my arms
around my breasts
to try and hide the
fact that people
can now see that
the water is frozen,
without even
getting wet.

I can see the
children playing
happily in the
ocean, oblivious
to the temperature
of the blue and
I wonder how
they do it.

I decide to
run back to my
beach towel
which should
provide me with
some comfort
and heat.

At the same time
my friend looks
at me as if to say -
let's go back
in the water

I smile shyly, just
baring my chattering
teeth and mumble
with confidence,
