People Change

by Hannah Lizette   May 27, 2012

Five years ago you were a different person,
a handsome, strong, loyal, loving man.
I used to think God sure did good on you,
the closest thing to perfection in my eyes.

Four years ago you were a different person,
a year together and so in love.
Chasing dreams and living life,
constantly by each others side.

Three years ago you were a different person,
slowly changing before my eyes.
Small white lies and unanswered phone calls,
whiskey on your breath as you kiss me.

Two years ago you were a different person,
small lies turned into big fisherman tales.
Wondering where you've been,
until I seen the red lipstick smeared on your neck.

A year ago you were a different person,
still trying to fix what can't be undone.
I had enough of your chaotic behavior,
you will always just be a drunk.

Today you were a different person,
the lowest you have ever sunk.
Whiskey will always be your best friend,
you will drown in your own misery.

So true, but then so many cannot see past the bottle.

When they can, it is usually too late!

Small lies turned into big fisherman tales. i like this line very much..
i think its a great poem

  • Nicely written.

    Verse 1:
    5years ago
Love how you showed the kind of man you fell in love with.

    Verse 2:
You show slight change but good change that would ultimately make you love him more.

    Verse 3:
You see a different more negative change. Though maybe not yet a deal breaker, you see he is a different and changing man to the one you first fell in love with.

    Verse 4:
You realise he's cheating on you. But perhaps because you have been together for years now, you think you may be able to survive this, if only the man you knew would return.

    Verse 5:
He's been tryingto redeem himself but not enough. You can love someone, but trust is harder and once broken its so very hard to repair it. You can forgive, but its harder to forget. To forget the sins, to forget the man you fell in love with...

    Verse 6:
Realising he wont change, he will only get worse from here. Realising loving him is pointless because you will only be second to the drink...

Nicely penned. You have expressed the emotion intensely as well as allowing the reader to guess at a few things themselves - the art of a skilled writer!
Loved how you wrote in annual increments down to the last day... Set the pace of the poem beautifully. 5/5
