    Wow, this is beautiful and sad. I cannot actually tell if you are writing about an actual war, or if you are talking about someone leaving - your father I assume if anybody.

    "You were not a soldier then,
    But a coward, retreating into a new life
    Leaving me even before you knew me"

    ^ This is my favorite part, because it is the truth for most.

      This poem comes from the situation where my father left my mother a month before I was born. I had 2 older brothers, and I have struggled all my life with what happened, but am working toward finding closure with him. I have never met him, but my goal is to do just that. I sent a letter to him recently and am waiting for his reply. Thank you for your kind words!
