Crayons and Glitter

A granny's little girl
is riddled with confusion,
as lying in bed she tries to understand
knowledge beyond her age.

Her grandmother has forgotten her
at only 6 years old
but how can this be so?

Mother says her memory is sick
and it makes her head forget.
"But how can she ever forget me,
does her heart love me no more? "

This tired child's thoughts
are like a whirlwind of emotions;
as she tries to catch one
that she can make sense of.

The bond they had was special
which she thought would never end.
Her granny was her hero,
her most favourite person on Earth.

When this girl started school
creative pictures she'd bring home.
Magnets would come out to make
them stick on granny's fridge.

Determination in her mind
to make her granny well,
made her climb across her bed
and pull out that old craft box.

Scissors, glue and coloured card
was spread across the floor.
Imagination running wild
while grasping onto hope.

When the morning came
and the sun shined hello,
she excitedly jumped out of bed
to race down the wooden stairs.

She hopped upon her granny's knee
gently opening her hands.
She placed the pictures one by one
For everyone to see.

They gasped in shock with such surprise
As granny cried with joy.
She kissed her granddaughter's rosy cheek
And thanked her for the gifts.

For on the pages she had drawn
Her grandmother's favourite things.
She recreated every drawing
that she had ever made.

Granny held the presents close
as tears rolled down her cheeks.
For this brief moment she knew herself
and remembered parts of her life.

The little girl smiled more than ever
now she had her granny back.
Precious memories periodically restored
using nothing but crayons and glitter.

The story - the heart - the voice - the innocence and purity; it is amazing. I love the emotions oozing from such an artistic piece :P Its very easy to put yourself in this character's shoes and to understand her pain. The word choice is perfect for personifying such a young child. I see that it was for a challenge, so it may or may not be true but it has the passion to seem truley inspired, lived, and loved. The flow is amazing and i truly love this piece.

The imagery here is great. I love the last line: 'knowledge beyond her age' -- gives rise to many different interpretations but I think the one you are saying is that she is beyond recognition of what is in front of her.

    Her grandmother has forgotten her
    at only 6 years old
but how can this be so?

This makes the poem seem as though it is from the child's perspective - very clever indeed.

Mother says her memory is sick
and it makes her head forget.
"But how can she ever forget me,
does her heart love me no more? "

This stanza really draws home the fact that some things are unable to be explained to a child - that their interpretation on the world is unique and innocent compared to an adult's with the knowledge. I love the question in this piece - again emphasises the child's perspective.

    This tired child's thoughts
    are like a whirlwind of emotions;
as she tries to catch one
that she can make sense of.

The image that I see here is a child in a room prancing around in despair, loneliness and frustration, trying to catch pieces of paper that seem to dance out of her reach constantly. Odd - and kind of emphasises the child's frustration at not knowing what to understand or feel about this situation.

The bond they had was special
which she thought would never end.
    Her granny was her hero,
her most favourite person on Earth.

I think that a child's bond with their grandparents is stronger than any realise - and when such an incident occurs, it is tremendously difficult on the child, more so than people tend to realise.

    When this girl started school
    creative picture's she'd bring home.
Magnets would come out to make
    them stick on granny's fridge.

    ^^
Remove the apostrophe in 'pictures' I think.
I love this - it's brings memories of everybody's childhood, whether it was granny's fridge or simply our parents. Beautiful imagery.

    Determination in her mind
    to make her granny well,
made her climb across her bed
and pull out that old craft box.

I can see this scene in my head. Cute yet awkward, beautiful yet sad. Lovely work.

    Scissors, glue and coloured card
    was spread across the floor.
    Imagination running wild
    while grasping onto hope.

I love a child's hope - their lack of understanding always allows for hope to remain strong throughout. Again remarkable imagery.

    When the morning came
    and the sun shined hello,
she excitedly jumped out of bed
to race down the wooden stairs.

    ^^
'the sun shined hello' -- I LOVE THIS. It also allows me to believe this is written by a child (though clearly it's not) - when reading it I imagine a sun with a smiling face - very cartoon-like I know. haha.

She hopped upon her granny's knee
    gently opening her hands.
She placed the pictures one by one
    For everyone to see.

    ^^
I can truly sense that child's cheeriness, the hope that it evokes within the reader.

They gasped in shock with such surprise
    As granny cried with joy.
She kissed her granddaughter's rosy cheek
And thanked her for the gifts.

    AWW!! *tears*

For on the pages she had drew
    Her grandmother's favourite things.
    She recreated every drawing
    that she had ever made.

    ^^
I think 'drew' should be 'drawn' ...?
Again -- AWW!! -- That is so gosh-damn beautiful!!

    Granny held the presents close
as tears rolled down her cheeks.
For this brief moment she knew herself
and remembered parts of her life.

    ^^
It's kind of funny how a child can help her grandmother when doctors and well adults in general couldn't help her see her past.

The little girl smiled more than ever
now she had her granny back.
    Precious memories periodically restored
using nothing but crayons and glitter.

    ^^
I love this ending. It makes the whole piece just that more precious.

    Well done! Well penned. 5/5
