A single rose, a single tear

by The Poet Behind The Poems   Dec 18, 2012

The mist of my breath disappears
Into the darkness of a November night.

With frost bitten hands I grasp a single
rose, reminding me of beauty I once held.

I stand over your eternal bed and with a
single tear I whisper, "goodnight my sleeping
beauty"-

one last time.

Tony, although this was a short piece, its powerful, it brings tears to my eyes while reading because I think so many of us can relate to losing someone we love. Its also so descriptive, that you can picture it in your mind. Comparing the beauty of the rose to the lost love I think is perfect because not only is a rose beautiful and fragile, but its also the flower of love and we give it when one passes as life is fragile. The last stanza really did me in, the single tear and the whisper of "goodnight my sleeping beauty", yeah that had the tears flowing real good. When a poet can touch a readers heart like this, to me, its a great work of art. And though this piece is sad its also breathtaking. Beautifully written Tony (7)

A short poem that not so much as kicks you in the face, it takes a huge 'run up' first.
I cannot believe that this young man has managed to cram a huge heart stopping emotional rollercoaster into only 8 lines, I have read this many times. Taking a look at each couplet we are taken by the hand and led to real sorrow, We begin with the scene set, a backdrop of a cold night emphasising sadness, Then we move onto classic imagery of love, a single rose, yet this rose is not a happy image, it is a reminder of what once was. Then the sadness cranks up 10 fold. 'eternal bed' shedding only a single tear, how much this single tear must hurt. Then the end, 'one last time'
It asks real questions, Why? Why one last time? Is he going to take his own life, is he moving on?
A great little poem that is thought provoking as it is tearful. Well done.

The contrast between love and loss is very evident even though you have very little lines in this poem. Very well done. Keep going, you're very talented.
