Fluorescent Lights

by Daylight Lucidity   May 16, 2013

Empty promises, empty words,
Dance behind my closed eyes
Begging to be heard
Over people's devastating lies.
Curled up into the blackest corner
Of my darkened room
Afraid to show her
All of myself; might she assume
I'm more broken than she knows
And run like the rest
Like I'm a terrifying freak show
Drowning in endless stress.
Maybe I'd take her into the city
Under the fluorescent lights
Where we can finish twirling
Like an attraction in the night.
Coloring our faces like a rainbow
Fading in and out as we walk
Down the streets; it is strange, though
The fluorescent lights seem to talk.
Yelling at me, haunting me,
Swearing I'm going to hell
If I hold her hand for all to see
But there's no one I can tell.

Lonesome in my darkness I cry
Every pitiful tear I can
Wishing the ache in my chest would cease
To grow even more painful than I can stand.
The mirror lay on the floor
Shattered and bloody
And now I'm sure
Under fluorescent lights
While I'm finally happy,
I'm the monster I tried to drown.
