A Poem About Poetry

by Gasttlee   Jul 28, 2014

Poetry,
a hidden,
yet clear message.

Powerful words of greatness
are a given
illustrating many aspects of life.

You hear hearts everywhere
giving illuminating light.

You get interesting understandings
of how differences appeal.

Line after line
your heart is deepened
as your mind generates.

Words are taken
for what they mean to you.

You learn new insight
and how it glorifies you.

You've got the soul
of a poet
to tell stories,
to inspire
and make an everlasting impact.

In short, poetry
is simply
everything we are
at any given moment
and so much more.

    Poetry,
    a hidden,
    yet clear message.

^ I like that you start off with an oxymoron in a way and yet it is entirely true.

    Powerful words of greatness
    are a given
    illustrating many aspects of life.

^ the first line here is interesting, but it felt kinda odd as I was reading it... like it could be tweaked a little bit.

    You hear hearts everywhere
    giving illuminating light.

^ "illuminating" should be illumination to or in the night because you can't have two words in different tense... it distracts the reader and it usually makes a piece look or feel sloppy. And this piece has so much more potential and beauty than sloppy work would.

    You get interesting understandings
    of how differences appeal.

^ again here the last line feels like it is in need of some tweaking... it just doesn't flow right. I like what you are trying to say though.

    Line after line
    your heart is deepened
    as your mind generates.

^ this is my favorite stanza. You are making a great point, you are spot on and it is well written.

    Words are taken
for what they mean to you.

^ this feels necessary to the poem but it feels choppy being put here and so short...

    You learn new insight
    and how it glorifies you.

^ the last line would make more sense if it read, "and that glorifies you" or something similar because as it is now it feels discombobulated like you are talking about two different things.

    In short, poetry
    is simply
    everything we are
    at any given moment.

    ^ great ending.

I think that if you reread this piece to yourself you will see where the flow is off or what doesn't quite sound right and by doing that you will be able to fix it a bit here and there, should you choose to.

As I said earlier the potential in this piece is wonderful and the concept is amazing
