When the one you love says it

by Yakari Gabriel   Sep 19, 2015

If only people knew,
all the things I share with nobody.
all the poetry I sleep with-
because they are parts of me
I genuinely feel no one deserves

I talk a lot about wanting to change
about becoming roses and straight hair
but we both know, they are somethings
not meant to be. That'll always be thunder
and a head full of curls.

before I left, I was so focused
on leaving. Only wanted my dreams
in my luggage. barely took clothes,
barely took books. left it all, gave it all-

my location on the map changed
but some insecurities are still intact.
some poems are still unwritten

the other day over the phone,
I told my mother that I am
not sure I can do this school thing
and she said "of course you can,
you have to" and suddenly
my whole life felt like
it was truly worth something

    Judging Comment:

What a touching write this is. At first I thought it
was a love poem but then understood the love of
a mother for her daughter. Each stanza is well
crafted with images one can see and understand.
I especially liked the third and the ending stanza
and it just shows the simple words of a mother
can make a child go further then she could realize.
Love this write and the images...lovely piece of write!

Writings like this, coming from deep, deep within, are the ones that make you pause a moment and sigh before cringing.

    Yaki boo, you are inspiring
I've watched you since early stages of writing, I've heard about all your dreams and passions and watching them come true is soooo exciting for me as a friend to see.

Balls to the wall baby, keep going
