As children often do,
I too, begged and pleaded
offering chores in exchange
for a want that was "needed"
This opening stanza draws me in because I want to find out what exactly was needed by that child, the one that begged.
As mothers often do,
with each stroke of the needle,
it was hand made with love
from an old wrought iron wheel
Singer sewing machine
A very true stanza. Mothers will do anything for their children and if this means making then something then they will just to see their babies smile, well most mothers will. The machine makes this sound old.
As girls often do,
I wore that dress, and often.
So much so, the ice cream man
nicknamed me Dorothy,
and always asked me where Toto was.
Yes, girls will wear their fave dressed often. I remember my cousin had a leopard print dress that was her fave and as soon as it was washed and dried it was back on. She once cried for it because it was in the machine lol. The ice cream man calling you Dorothy makes me think of a blue and white dress.
As teenagers often do,
and I did,
about the blue gingham dress
stuffed away in the back of the closet
in a trash bag that eventually made its way
to the curb for a Tuesday pick-up
This is so sad because we often forget of the things hat we once couldn't get enough of.
As grown-ups often do,
We reminisce and regret
about things we wish we could change.
Oh, how I wish I could change,
right back into that dress,
ice cream stains and all.
A very true stanza because yes as adults we reminisce often and regret things that we can't change but I personally think if we did change them then would things ever truly be different.
This poem deserves to be acknowleged by the whole world

Your writing always pulls me in with your storytelling and lovely way with words; you have an almost calming and melodic way of writing which is intriguing.
Reminiscing seems to become a habit as we get older and plays an ever bigger part in our lives. The problem is, sometimes we spend so long remembering, we forget to make new memories.....
All the best and well done,
What a lovely poem Dixiedaisy!
I like your way with words, and yes, I'm sure a lot of us yearn to be back in the past, refreshing and revisiting those great memories that we had way back when.
Nicely penned Dixiedaisy!
