An Eyeful of Fear

by Shelley Williams   Mar 28, 2016

Late one Wednesday night
I thought it was just me,
Alone in the bedroom
in the place I chose to be.

The closet was my comfort
squished between a box,
Serenity in silence
among my painted rocks.

My hobby was collecting
rocks to paint and store,
Piled up inside my closet
where I sat with open door.

There was little room
in the safety of my cave,
A quick run to the bathroom
was a reminder to be brave.

I hurried past the shadows
that lined the hallway wall,
My hair carried a sock
snarled up like a yarn ball.

I searched for the switch
with one hand in my hair,
Struck by a dark reflection,
an overwhelming glare.

I stood in silent tremble
frozen with wide open eye,
In the shock of the moment
I thought that I might die.

I made it to the bedroom
stunned by what I saw,
My voice had a stutter
from the tightness in my jaw.

The strange has an effect
on a mind that is strong,
Anxious to change my pants
I knew something must be wrong.

My heart was pounding Dixie,
dizzy from the sudden fear,
I tried to think clearly
of the figure in the mirror.

It was hard to calm down
from such an awful scare,
If I were to use the bathroom
it would have to be a dare.

I turned on the lights
and shut the bedroom door,
The ugly image followed me
into the dread once more.

In the power of a glance
my hair let go the sock,
The terror of the moment
made it impossible to talk.

I held tight the carpet
breathing in panic attack,
A night of fearful struggle,
in my hand a paper sack.

Morning light is beautiful
for one who can't let go,
A sign of hope is felt
in the movement of a toe.

In thinking of my night
and all that I went through,
Rest was peace of mind
and dream a pleasant view.

The day gave me a chance
to find my source of fear,
There was a crack of terror
in my reflection in the mirror.

I can totally relate! I scare myself looking into the mirror every morning-lol. I'm still trying to figure out what the heck happened during the night.
