Honors (ode to my mother)

by Yakari Gabriel   Jun 12, 2016

My mother has no diplomas,
doesn't speak more than the Spanish language,
colonizers shoved down our country's throat..
but, she knows what every single bird
is singing, how to make everyone laugh
knows that if at night the sky
is full of stars it won't rain,
knows a herb for every pain
a meal for every level of heartache-
how to stop a wound from bleeding
with coffee, how to measure fever with a touch,
what to do when somebody is shaking,
how to love children that aren't hers,
how to keep plants alive longer
and there is no school in the world -
honorable enough for that type
of knowledge.
