Single life

by Em   Sep 8, 2016

Washing plates
and dirty pans;
thinking to myself
"I need a man."
Can't open the pickles
or reach the jam,
got to eat meals for one
and the full can of ham.
I don't miss the fighting,
I can starfish in bed.
No need to wear make up
nor brush the hair on my head.
May as well stay single
so I can do as I please
no need for a man
because now I can breathe.

    Hello,

This was a nice, little piece. Soft and playful, and comforting.

I like how it began with wanting a man, but ended realising that actually, she didn't. I do think the shift needed to be a little more pronounced, though, just so we the reader - and maybe even the character - get a sense of the shifting.

    But yes, rather enjoyable.

    Regards,

    Bradley

    Hello Em,

I like this, there are like two voices talking, expressing different opinions:

    (Miss needy)

    Washing plates
    and dirty pans;
    thinking to myself
    "I need a man."
    Can't open the pickles
    or reach the jam,
got to eat meals for one
and the full can of ham.

    (Miss don't needy)

    I don't miss the fighting,
    I can starfish in bed.
No need to wear make up
nor brush the hair on my head.
    May as well stay single
so I can do as I please
    no need for a man
    because now I can breathe.

    (Miss want not need)

    When the time comes
and I'm in the right place
    I'll meet a man
    of just my taste:
    He'll be funny and kind
    and want to know me,
    we'll be best of friends
    and live happily.

    (Miss new me)

    Why will this work,
    well I'll tell you now;
    It will be because
    of my personal vowel:
I will only give my heart
to a heart that is kind,
    wants me as a whole,
    love my body and mind.

Yaas! Haha. I am a bed hog, don't like sharing. I am a single mom, though, so I still have to fend off the kids (2 & 4) who refuse to sleep in their own beds.

    Hello Em

What strikes me most about this poem is the palpable relief that emanates from it!
After a relationship that's so destructive emotionally, the single life really can seem like the best option.

Take care and all the best

    Ben
