The Rival (tanka)

by Larry Chamberlin   Oct 1, 2016

He's not a bad man
just madly in love with Her -
the same as I am;
for the one she does not choose
living must somehow go on.

    Larry, this is a powerful piece that I guess if we can't relate to now then we will someday.
    Many people may love us but I feel if we choose the right one then we will be fine.
    Reminds me of the quote: If you love two people choose the second because if you loved the first you wouldn't want for the second (or something like that) I know this is completely different as its not being in love with two people but two people loving that special person though I guess it's hard because you will always feel like you are competing, I know I did when I found out my friend felt strongly for one of my exes.

    Fantastically written, Em

      Thanks all. This was written upon awakening from a dream. Most of it was already "in" the dream.

    A very nice tanka, loved the subject matter. It's not easy being the one not chosen. I agree with Ben, a little compassion for the other.

    Hello Larry,

    I think if we can look upon a rival in love with some compassion - with all the raging jealousy and frustration that usually accompanies having one - then we are much the better for being able to do so.
    After all, if they are the ones not chosen, living must somehow go on, as you say and surely a little sympathy must then be felt!

    Take care,

    Ben

    I love this write Larry, the scales of love can at times be finely balanced.
