A Bond of Support

by Shelley Williams   Dec 19, 2016

A mom raises her young
and with nurture share,
The hug of a Godparent
is warm with tender care.

A promise to be there,
to protect and to teach,
Children learn to get along
and use the proper speech.

A blessing of support,
helps mom through the day,
An example for her children
creative in dramatic play.

The baby crawl, a toddler walk,
they reach a milestone,
Watched by a caregiver,
as if the child were her own.

Days pass and weeks go by,
months turn into years,
The devotion of a Godmother
comforts and dries their tears.

A Mom is unconditional,
keeps her children warm,
A friend of understanding
allows this bond to form.

    Hello Shelly,

I don't recall ever reading a Godparent poem before, so I must say, it's refreshing seeing this one posted. The dedication and love for the child from infant to years on is evident. Being a Godparent has responsibilities, such as guidance and being a listening ear. To love unconditionally is love indeed.

I like the format of this poem; using compact stanzas and rhyme made for a pleasant read.

    Take care, Shelly.

I enjoyed this write, though I'm not anyone's godparent yet, I'm extremely close with my cousins who are all under the age of 15, the youngest being about 6. While I was growing up, they've lived at my house for a while; one of my fondest memories would have to be coming home from school (I was quite young)l and being greeted by a toddler who just figured out to crawl. I still remember the feeling, it was equal parts excitement, glee and pride. I hope to be a godparent/uncle one day, and a parent in the future. Sorry, I veered off topic, but I Just wanted to say, I enjoyed this piece and related to parts of it. :)
