Social Media

140 characters isn't enough to describe, the emptiness inside
a bird's name begging for validation, typing- sometimes crying
notice me, compliment me, I'm craving sympathy
commiserate with me and my plight
why can't everything just be -right-

basing value on favorites and likes
wanting the world to see just how
-nice and artsy, beautiful- lively
fun spontaneous we can be!
when dull and lack-luster is the reality

filter out the flaws- angled perfection
more like angled deception.
at the end of the day
screens glowing brighten the darkened room
hoping for views

lest your perception distort
twisting unable to sleep with the creeping thoughts
at the end of the day-
the image we portray is a sad substitute
for who we are everyday

social media seeps deeper,
making self-image less treasured
why think highly of yourself-
when we can get someone else too

socially starving, socially awkward
a generation raised with self-doubt and glowing screens
absent parents and media distorting their dreams

-YOU are only as important as the number of likes-

At least that's what were taught
