Song Sung Blue (Neil Diamond)

by hiraeth   May 19, 2017

we were bound together –
we painted blue skies onyx by choice,
when we decided that the xanthous sun
shined brighter than any of us could.

we recited her words –
watching the blue skies fade.

we blossomed like rainflowers,
the storms brought with it
the song of your soul.

funny thing,
we sung your song blue,
with a cry perched on
our lips.

Contest comment: I almost didn't want to vote for this piece, even though it was so stunning, because it has the voice of a very particular poet here. (Heads up, I was right!) But after reading all of the pieces in this round multiple times, it was ultimately one of my top three in this round so I needed to. The imagery in this one is really what set this piece apart for me, I listened to the song while reading this and it was so different. Starkly different. The song was much more plain and it almost lacked personality to me, but the poem was filled with a personal take to a mixture of lines from the song and made them even more beautiful. Even though this was a contest piece, I feel as though it is one of my favorite on this site to date.

And now I am nominating it because this is still one of my favorites and beautifully penned.
