To Float In Nature

The only sounds that I can hear
Are the singing of the birds
I wish for them to go back to sleep
I do not want song or words.

I know they will not do as I desire
so I carry on to the edge
Water lapping gently round my ankles
I've had this planned for days.

The boat edging through the water
My paddle in my hand,
Timber felled, shaped and varnished
It pushes me swiftly from the land.

The shore line half a mile behind
I stop to listen and view
The sun threatening to rise in the east
And the night beasts watch me too.

The deer is not phased by me
If I was a threat then it would flee
I'm floating in the middle of that lake
But it watches with curiosity.

I make the canoe twist and dance in circles
This is what I'm trained to do
No children at this time to teach
Though that time is coming soon.

I've stolen this moment of indulgence
To remind me of what I am
My love, my passion and my peace in this
Reminds me I'm just a man.

The sun is already climbing
Already, I have to head on back
The blade never leaves the water once
But the boat cuts an arrows path.

The canoe lifted from the shore
I carry it back to base
The little folks need to be rise now
But I've a smile upon my face

Everyone fed and watered
Everyone filled with food and fuel
Time to hit the water again
Though this time, its training and rules.

Back upon the shore now
I notice the deer has vanished to the woods
Yet I feel that we shared something
That can't be fully understood.
