And If Not?

by NightPersonality   Jun 4, 2017

What happened to the degree you said you were going to get?
What happened to "the last time" you were going to smoke a cigarette?

What happened to the fitness goals you set?
Are they just sitting in a box, in the closet, with the rest of your regrets?

You hope, you pray, you work everyday to save up money; so that one day,
You can live happily ever after, with the one you love, in your cozy hideaway.

What then?

Will you consider your life's work complete; have you changed lives?
Or perhaps you were hoping to leave the world a better place?
Will your work be revered, and stored in historical archives?

What then?

And if not; if none of those scenarios apply to you,
What now?

Will you brandish your pen, your gun, your sword;
Will you change your life for the better?
Will you wake up tomorrow morning, and push forward?

And if not?

What then?

Ha! Do not ask me those questions. :-) See, I am thinking of the answers anyway. This is beautiful and compelling!

Holy crap this is really really good. I have added it to my favorites. And if i could nominate it tomorrow i would. This seems to be a perspective poem which makes it a big plus in my book. It seems like the character is wondering about a lost love maybe? That would be my guess. Or it could be deeper than that too. It could be a self reflection of yourself and wondering what will happen next in life and this part hit me hard because i relate to this so much.

As i said i love the perspective of what then. After you complete your list what happens next. Does anyone really know or do we take life day by day and not know?. There is just so much i want to say but cannot find the words. Just know this is a brilliant write! Well done!

Thanks so much Jamie, I appreciate it! :) It's meant to be interpreted by the reader however they'd like; but you are right, it is a reflection of self (I included a few of my vices in there). It also explores the idea that every one person wants to make their mark on the world, and to ask yourself "why?"

Again I really appreciate the feedback Jamie! Thanks so much! :)
