A Traveler and his Friend (Story)

by Milo   Oct 2, 2017

A traveler came to me.
A traveler between worlds it seem
And he was strange no less
But he's the first person I have seen
Since I left.

We talked about worldly things
Subtle things.
Like what it feels when wind
Hits your face.
He helps me remember.

Ah the memories are fading
I wish it wasn't so.
He tells me heaven isn't real.
I argue all the time it does exist.

I want to believe that I can see the light again.
I want to see the red lipstick on my lips.
Breathe in the warmth that touches my skin,
Near grandma Madeline's fireplace.

I want to see the smoke rising from the chimney
I want to feel the water splashed all over me.
Like the water splashing over the hot coals.
I want to see myself smiling, even though there
Are no mirrors and I am always cold.

I want to see the train station
And wave goodbye to all the strangers aboard,
Wish them all a farewell.
I would give anything to live once more

I want to wear the dress I've seen
Across the street,
Horse carriages would stop
Just to see me go by.

I want to hug you with all my heart,
My dear child.
Cry with joy that I can feel emotions
Talk forever about everything
And keep on talking!

It frustrates me that I can't remember your name.
I scream, I yell and cry.
He tells me it'll be alright
So we remember the basics
I think real hard to know who I am

And when he leaves I am sad
So I wait patiently for his return.
I wait for the traveler, my newfound friend.

I wait again and again.
To finally say that
I love you
And I'll be alright.
I am resting high above,
(She thinks she's in heaven)
Though I can't remember who you are.

The traveler said to her in the dark
As he gets up and about to leave,
"But you still remember love.
That's worth remembering with your beating heart"

Even if it's no longer beating.
I woke up with the image of her waving at me,
Smiling as if death never deterred her for what she is, happy and loved.

I liked this a lot. Although it was long it kept me engaged all the way through. Well done-
