Skin Deep

Symbolic etchings of happy and sadness
Drenched with significance upon my canvas
Applied with pain, in no small part
To be admired or disliked, just like any art

Searching for sense as we stumble on through
And some of us choose to adorn with our truth
So that others might understand as well
That we achieved meaning on this carousel

A message to the world from the bearer
Something's being conveyed by the wearer
To some it's sacrilege for skin to blemish
To others a lasting tribute to cherish

A practice as old as the winds of time
The scarification of belonging; "My tribe"
Or ... "this is what really matters to me,
And I'd like to display it for all to see"

So please don't judge with too much haste
Whether or not ink's in good taste
Don't feel contempt, or to wrong conclusions leap
It's relevance to me truly is skin deep.

    Tattoos really are a marmite thing aren't they? Believe it or not, I have one myself on my arm. My wife designed it. It's feathers around my children's initials which are all entwined and was done purely for me. If others see it, fine, if not, I don't care. Before I had it done, I wouldn't have believed I'd ever had had one, but I don't regret it at all. My father's not keen though...

      I have a bear for my son, a ying yang, and ... would you believe ... a cat! :-)

    Ohhh this is beautiful! Far too often people look at others and just assume who they are based on looks.

    I love the rhyming and the message sent across.

    i would love to get a tat but am far to afraid of needles!! :)

    I also had the tattoo idea come to mind.. Either way, I love this peice. Beautifully worded and written. Had a certain rhyme to it, mostly. Made me want to keep reading more. Great work.
