A sorrowful Christmas

by Walter   Dec 24, 2017

She has only one wish for Christmas
Although she knows she won't receive
She is not feeling joyous
As her feelings can only grieve

Only one candle burning
Lights her Christmas tree almost bare
With just a star at the top
To make a wish for her despair

Once the happiest times
Was shared through the festive season
But now feeling she’s been robbed
Her heart emptied for no reason

And her tears begin to fall
As the clock's hands pass midnight
Even though she feels depleted
She can't ignore her plight

The church bells start to chime
And people celebrate with cheers
But she has no one left in front of her
Except her own reflection from her tears

Very emotional, and I noticed that you said this was inspired by a work colleague. My heart goes out to them. All too often we bask in our own joy and merriness that we forget it is not like that for others. It's not easy or simple for them to rejoice, and most often, it has nothing to do with lack of gratitude but the immediate feelings of despair. This should call us to compassion.

Thank you Poet and very well said. I can't even tell you how many times I thought about her while I was surrounded by family on Xmas day. Like Em says, it broke my heart too.

Walter, such a sad write. It's unfortunate that a lot of people deal with this as their reality. Well done-

So sad! I really think that the festive time of year can make a bad situation worse. It shines a spotlight on issues and makes lonely people feel even more so. Well written as ever Walter :-) x
