When I Grow Up

by Mortal Utopia   Dec 30, 2017

When I saw you lost and sad
about things
I guess I never really understood,

I knew
what I wanted to be
when I’m a grown up like you.

I wanted to be the light
waiting for you
at the end of your dark, dark tunnel –

like the stars you find after looking and looking
through the telescope
at the black, black sky.

I wanted to be Light –
maybe a special kind,
like the sun or the moon,

or if I’m not bright enough,
I want to at least be like that lonely firefly
we once saw,

letting you know everything is okay.
