Broken Butterflies

by Tony   Jan 5, 2018

I don't know why I punish myself
With what will never be
I keep coming back to your picture
That my heart just can't unsee

I asked myself a question today
"What's your biggest regret?"
The answer has been haunting me
"That I never could forget..."

Forget the way you made me feel
Everytime that we held hands
That when we danced together
It was a miracle that I could stand

Forget the way your perfume lingered
Whenever you passed by
The smell of your curly hair
As I held you when you cried

Forget your perfect smile
Or the sparkle in your eyes
Forget the pain they covered up
But never could disguise

Forget your bubbly voice
The sexy way it cracks when you laugh
And how the absence of your words
Has ripped my heart in half

Forget that after all this time
These feelings haven't changed
But dormant right beneath the surface
Begging to be explained

Forget that this fantasy
My heart so tightly gripped
Leaves a different feeling in my stomach
For the butterflies' wings are clipped

A very powerful poem, Tony, and very well rhymed throughout. I have to admit to having a lump in my throat at the conclusion of this one...

    All the best,
