Protagonist

by Alex Penuelas   Jan 16, 2018

Sweetheart, I don't want to
shower you with another platitude,
or utter another cliche to
describe the situation you are in.

There's only so many times
that I can tell you that
"It gets better",
before it comes off sounding like
a cheap card you give to someone
when you have nothing fruitful to say.

So let me be blunt, since I know you prefer this.

The hole that you are in
is one that I cannot help you
escape from.

And I will not always be there
to swoop in and save you
like a superhero who waits
for a giant floodlight.

Only you know how to
get yourself out of this,
you just have to trust in
the little voice that tells you
to keep pushing on.

Keep that little voice in you alive.

For it will not fail you
as others can and will.

I can support you along the way,
but I cannot walk for you,
nor make the decisions you need to me made
for you.

I am, after all,
a supporting character in the story
that you are fabricating.

And you are your own protagonist.

So pick up your pen and keep writing forward.
